Use Case - Mass Updates
Restructuring companies calls for mass updates in RACF
Situation:
This is another relatively common situation: As a result of reengineering, the company is
being restructured, and two departments are being combined to form a new department with extended
responsibilities.
Everyone working in each of the original departments now has to take over additional
responsibilities, i.e. those that were originally limited to the other department. This means that
everyone in the new department needs additional access rights to go with the new responsibilities.
Complications:
The RACF Administrator needs to make two different sets of identical changes to the
authorizations of two large groups of people. This involves a lot of work, and is bound to take a
long time.
Solution:
Using an editor, the RACF administrator can solve the problem by putting together the
necessary RACF command sequences for each group, copying them, and then redefining them for each of
the user IDs concerned. First, however, a list has to be drawn up of all the users in a particular
default group, each of the groups representing the original department, no easy task in RACF.
The ideal solution is offered by the mass update function of the Beta 88 zSecurity
Administrator . Very easy to use, user lists can be obtained in the shortest possible time by
specifying the default group, for example, as a selection criterion. All the necessary RACF
commands can be generated just as quickly and can either be executed immediately, or collected in a
special file where they can be checked and, if necessary, modified first.
Another routine task that's accomplished in minutes. Click here to take a closer look at Beta
