How Harbor Enterprise NSM Works
How Harbor Enterprise NSM works
Harbor Enterprise NSM Architecture
Harbor Enterprise NSM on z/OS consists of a highly scalable backup
server and a policy server hosted on the z/OS platform. Harbor
Enterprise NSM Backup Clients are installed on each open-systems
platform, and Harbor Enterprise NSM Backup Agents are installed on
each database and email server.
Each backup server supports multiple clients and agents, which work
with the backup server to provide backup/restore and
archive/retrieve functions. Backup servers as well as backup jobs
are governed by enterprise-wide policies stored on the policy
server and managed via the administration console. The Harbor
Enterprise NSM administrator defines the backup and storage
policies that will be applied to every backup job, such as whether
to do full or incremental backups, how many versions to retain, or
what storage class to use.
How Backups Work
Backup jobs are automatically initiated to an established schedule.
Each client forwards a list of candidate backup files, which the
backup server trims according to the appropriate retention and
exclusion policies. The reduced file list is returned to the
client. The client first compresses, if configured to utilize
compression, and then transmits only the files left on the list.
LAN-less backups utilize ESCON/FICON channels for ultra-fast data
transmission.
Harbor Enterprise NSM manages a multitude of backup jobs
simultaneously, forwarding the data from each job to storage
according to the appropriate storage policy. As jobs complete,
queued up backup jobs are released for data transmission. During
non-backup times, Harbor Enterprise NSM consolidates backup data
into condensed packages, enabling best possible restore times.
Duplicate backup data tapes are sent, electronically or physically,
to the corporate disaster recovery site.
Harbor NSM Solution Implementation
Harbor Enterprise NSM integrates a mainframe-hosted backup server
to provide a seamless backup and recovery solution throughout the
enterprise. With its central policy server and single point of
administration, Harbor Enterprise NSM manages the entire enterprise
regardless of whether data is backed up. Harbor Enterprise NSM
provides the ability to manage data remotely and the flexibility to
set policy globally across the organization or according to the
needs of the regional office.
