- SAM Jupiter’s role-based user administration (RBAC) ranked ‘very good’
Berlin, Germany, 12 April 2006 - Beta Systems Software AG (Prime Standard: BSS on the German stock exchange), a leading supplier of security and identity management (IdM) solutions, today announced that it has been ranked among the top five IdM vendors with its SAM Jupiter product in a new IdM study* undertaken by CSC, the global IT consulting and services company.
The tests carried out by CSC were run on the new Windows version of SAM Jupiter, which CSC noted as offering a comprehensive base of IdM functionality. CSC made its selection of products to be included in the study based on the breadth of coverage of functional requirements and an assessment by experts of the products’ suitability for their purpose. The goal of the study was to support businesses in their choice of suitable IdM solutions, thus enabling CSC to respond to its customers’ growing demand for professional support and services.
Beta Systems’ SAM Jupiter Product Achieves Good Overall Ranking
According to CSC, Beta Systems is one of the five leading vendors of IdM solutions. The solution used for the study was the new Windows version 4.1 of the UNIX- and Windows-based core product, SAM Jupiter. Overall, the study ranked SAM Jupiter as having a solid range of functionality; good role-based administration capabilities; reliable target system connectors; and a powerful Windows-based architecture. The implementation of predefined scenarios by Beta Systems in the testing laboratory was described in the study as having been completed smoothly and successfully, even at short notice.
Technical Aspects Perform Well in the Ranking
The CSC study notes that - with Oracle and DB2 as its repository - SAM Jupiter is underpinned by powerful database systems. The new Windows version demonstrated good overall performance and it was noted that SAM Jupiter can easily be connected to practically any data source – an important part of efficiently automating user administration. A function for consolidating user IDs is also available.
SAM Jupiter includes an integrated workflow system that is easy to configure via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) and can be used to request user accounts, roles and permissions and to modify user settings. The product also enables individual workflows to be tested, a capability highlighted by CSC.
With regards to role-based user administration, the study emphasises the fact that SAM Jupiter supports the first two levels of the RBAC ANSI standard, so that role hierarchies are available together with inherited properties.
Good Marks for the Implementation Team
Beta Systems’ experienced Professional Services Team was rated positively for the fast implementation of the solution in the test lab. The test scenarios were completed very quickly and smoothly.
“Beta Systems’ good rating in the study by CSC underlines our leading position in the Identity Management market,” explained Dr. Martin Kuhlmann, Product Manager Business Line IdM at Beta Systems Software AG. “It also confirms our flexibility and expertise in project implementation, which for an identity management solution is critical for fast return on investment.”

*CSC Study “Identity Management Solutions Help Companies
Be More Agile”
For this study published in March 2006,
products from five vendors - Beta Systems, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and Siemens –
were analysed in-depth and rated. The assessment of the identity management
products was based on theoretical and practical information from three different
sources. These included the vendors’ answers to an extensive questionnaire
developed by CSC; the implementation of predefined scenarios by each vendor in a
laboratory environment; and the practical experience of specialists from CSC.
The starting point for the rating process was made up of 119 individual criteria
grouped under 14 headings. The results for each vendor are shown as a graphical
“spider’s web”.
