Magyar Posta Renews and Extends Beta Systems Contract
PRESS RELEASE
Magyar Posta Renews and Extends Beta Systems Contract
- New hardware and software components enable Hungarian Postal Organisation to process its 1.2 million documents per day more quickly and efficiently
Berlin, 30 March 2006 – Beta Systems Software AG (Prime Standard: BSS on the German stock exchange), a leading supplier of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions, today announced that Magyar Posta, the Hungarian postal organisation, has renewed a major contract for the hardware and software it currently uses for the electronic processing of payment receipts. It has also extended the contract with the purchase of numerous additional components.
Magyar Posta has been a customer of Beta Systems (formerly Kleindienst) since 1996 and during that time it has processed approximately three billion payment transactions. The postal organisation uses Kleindienst DL 1660 high-speed document readers, whose software and hardware will now be upgraded with the newest technology for Optical Character Recognition (OCR) readers, cameras, endorsing and filing. The software controlling the read process will also be replaced by the universal scan program, ProSort. In addition, the system will be extended from paper processing to include the import of electronic information in ASCII and/or image formats and to prepare them for subsequent processing by other applications. Using the new applications and components, the postal service will be able to process its documents more quickly and efficiently.
Over the last few years, the number of documents being processed at Magyar Posta has constantly increased. At peak times, the company handles up to two million documents over two shifts. The postal service has opted to continue using the Beta Systems hardware, software and services to ensure that the documents are dealt with rapidly and securely within the obligatory time limits.
The Beta Systems Solution in Use at Magyar Posta
A total of four high-speed scanners operate, each with a
performance of 60,000 A6-sized documents per hour. They produce
images of the documents and use an OCR engine to recognise coded
signs on them. If error-free OCR is not possible due to the
unsatisfactory quality of the document, the handwritten entries on
it are interpreted from the image file and used as the basis for
further processing. The ProSort control software labels the reverse
side of the documents in different ways and sorts them into the
scanner’s pocket modules. To meet the stringent quality
requirements, checks and corrections of the captured data can be
carried out on up to 64 workstations.
The data is then converted into a special format and transferred
to the company’s central host computer.
For data transfer to participating banks, special storage media and
an output list in different text and/or image formats are prepared.
The next step in the process involves storage of the document
information and images (together with the ASCII data attached to
them - included for any necessary data reconciliation) in Beta
Systems’ high-volume, high-performance electronic archive. To
facilitate document searching and retrieval requests, data can also
be retrieved directly from the archive and the document image – or
parts of it – can be printed out.
“We are now able to safely and securely process the huge number of paper-based transactions involved in money transfers thanks to the high-performance, scalable and reliable solutions from Beta Systems,” said Imre Szarka, Manager of the Financial Services Business Unit at Magyar Posta. “We’ve succeeded in accelerating throughput times and in significantly reducing the time needed for manual post-processing, because of the excellent quality of the images. But the most convincing argument for expanding our current system was the flexible and customer-friendly service from Beta Systems as well as the professional support they’ve given us over the last few years.”
“Magyar Posta’s decision to intensify and extend our collaboration with Beta Systems underscores our position as a capable ECM partner. In Central and Eastern Europe we have established ourselves as the leading vendor in this area,” explained Norbert Baumgaertner, General Manager of the ECM business line at Beta Systems. “We recently signed another large deal in Croatia for the installation of 240 de-central scanner systems across the country. At Croatia’s leading bank, which has been a customer of ours since 1992, we now handle the processing of paper-based financial transactions as well as their document management system.”
